Including the iRestore most owners pick, the $1,899 Elite, the cheapest cleared device that clears our rating floor, and why where you buy decides your refund.

Short answer

Buy the iRestore Professional: 1,309 ratings at 4.4 stars on 24 October 2026 and an FDA clearance on record. Buy it from iRestore if you want its 12-month refund; Amazon’s window is 30 days. Cheapest option: Hairmax’s Ultima 12 comb. Skip the $54 caps.

We read 12 laser cap, helmet and comb listings on Amazon on 24 October 2026 and checked each brand against the FDA’s 510(k) records. Two cleared our review floor of 4.1 stars on more than 100 ratings with a clearance we could verify. Both were iRestores.

A Hairmax comb clears the rating floor but not the sample size. Capillus, Theradome, Kiierr and every other Hairmax read between 3.2 and 4.0 stars, all with FDA clearances. The one cheap cap that cleared our floor had no clearance we could find.

This page isn’t medical advice. Hair loss has causes a device won’t touch, and a dermatologist should see it first.

What FDA clearance means here

Laser hair devices go through FDA’s 510(k) route, under product code OAP. A 510(k) clearance means FDA found a device substantially equivalent to one already legally sold. It isn’t approval, and it doesn’t show the device will work for you.

We searched FDA’s 510(k) records through openFDA on 24 October 2026. Code OAP held 112 records. Twelve of the newest 18 went to manufacturers in mainland China, several for devices sold under other companies’ brand names.

Viconor “Laser Hair Growth Cap”None found under that nameRating yes; record unverified

The $53.99 Viconor cap repeats FDA-style indication wording in its bullets but cites no K-number, and no 510(k) appears under its name. A cap can be covered by its factory’s clearance under another name, so that isn’t proof it’s uncleared. It means you can’t check.

The return window decides more than the device

These devices take months to show anything. Hairmax’s own refund page cites four to six months, and iRestore owners in the reviews describe three to six.

Amazon’s listing for the iRestore Professional offered a 30-day refund or replacement on 24 October 2026. iRestore’s refund policy, updated 2 October 2026, offers 12 months, less a 25 per cent service fee and sales tax, on orders placed directly with iRestore. Hairmax offers six months, less a 20 per cent fee, also on direct orders only.

One Elite owner put the problem in a sentence: “Odd that it has a 30 day return but it says it takes 3 months for visible results.”

So if you want the long guarantee, buy direct. We don’t earn anything when you buy from iRestore’s own site. We do earn when you buy from Hairmax’s, through Rakuten.

What 75 critical reviews say

Amazon’s star filters worked on 24 October 2026. For each ranked device, plus the Essential, we pulled the critical reviews Amazon served under two sorts and the one- and three-star pages, then sorted them by hand.

iRestore Professional259367
iRestore Elite186129
Hairmax Ultima 12 Classic85102
iRestore Essential247638

“No visible result” leads on every device. That’s the honest centre of this category.

Six of the 49 critical reviews on the Professional and Essential also describe heavy shedding or faster loss after starting. Some owners say it passed; others stopped. If you already use finasteride or minoxidil, ask your doctor before adding a device.

The most owners behind any device here: 1,309 ratings at 4.4 stars on 24 October 2026, 87 per cent four or five.

Sold by iRestore and shipped by Amazon. FDA cleared it in May 2019 as the iRestore Professional 282, K183417. The Professional was $899.00, and its listing says to use it for 25 minutes, two or three times a week.

The complaint that matters: nine of the 25 critical reviews report no visible change, several after six months or more. An August 2026 two-star: “I've used this consistently every other day as it recommends for 6 months now and have had no discernable difference.” Buy it from iRestore directly if you want the 12-month refund.

Seller, 24 October 2026: iRestore, shipped by Amazon, with a 30-day Amazon return. iRestore’s 12-month guarantee applies only to orders placed on its own site, which we don’t link.

$1,899 buys more light sources than the Professional. It doesn’t buy more owners.

195 ratings at 4.3 stars on 24 October 2026, 84 per cent four or five, sold by iRestore. iRestore’s comparison chart on Amazon lists 500 lasers and LEDs against the Professional’s 282. FDA cleared it as the ID-510 iRestore Elite in 2022, K222081. The Elite costs $1,000 more.

Its one-star share is 11 per cent, against 7 for the Professional. Six of 18 critical reviews report no result and four call it bulky or ill-fitting.

One owner also on finasteride and minoxidil was candid: “Is my hair coming back? Yes! Is it because of this? No clue!”

A comb, not a cap, and the cheapest cleared device we found that meets our rating floor.

4.1 stars on 81 ratings on 24 October 2026, under our 100-rating minimum, so treat it as a thin sample. 76 per cent four or five. The Ultima 12 Classic was $254.15 from Hairmax Official on Amazon and $299 on Hairmax’s own site. Hairmax’s LaserComb line was first cleared in 2007.

Five of the eight critical reviews report nothing after months. A July 2025 one-star named the trap: “Why do they want you to wait 5-6 months before you see results? Because by then the return window has closed.”

Hairmax’s six-month refund applies only to direct orders. That’s the case for paying $45 more there.

Seller, 24 October 2026: Hairmax Official on Amazon. Hairmax’s six-month money-back offer covers orders placed directly with Hairmax, the button beside Amazon’s.

Ones that didn’t make the list

iRestore Essential. 4.0 stars on 3,527 ratings on 24 October 2026, just under our floor, with 13 per cent one-star. The same device bundled with a battery pack reads 4.2 on 640, a separate listing; we rank on the larger sample. Six of 24 critical reviews describe it failing.

One Essential owner flagged something worth knowing: “please be aware some of the lights are only LEDs--not laser lights.”

Theradome PRO LH80. 4.0 stars on 494 ratings that day, 15 per cent one-star, cleared as K171775. Close to the floor, not over it.

Hairmax LaserBand 41 and RegrowMD. 3.9 on 199 and 3.6 on 318. The RegrowMD cap’s buy box was held by a third-party seller.

The $54 Viconor cap. 4.2 stars on 566 ratings, which clears our floor, but no 510(k) we could find under its name. On a page about cleared devices, that rules it out.

Kiierr and Capillus. 3.9 on 112 for Kiierr’s 272 and 148, and 3.2 on 13 for the Capillus PRO. Thirteen ratings is too few to judge Capillus either way.

Which should you buy?

The iRestore Professional, bought from iRestore if you want the year-long refund, or from Amazon if you’d rather have Amazon’s 30 days.

The Elite only if a bigger device matters more to you than $1,000; its owners aren’t happier. The Hairmax comb if your budget stops near $300 and you’ll actually comb your scalp every other day.

Why they rank in this order

Review count first, then average, then distribution. The Professional leads on both: 1,309 ratings at 4.4 stars on 24 October 2026, against the Elite’s 195 at 4.3.

The Hairmax comb ranks third as a named exception. Its 4.1 stars meet the rating floor; its 81 ratings don’t meet the sample floor. We kept it because it’s the only cleared device under $500 that meets the rating floor.

Questions men actually ask

Do laser caps actually work for hair loss?

For some people, slowly, and the evidence is modest. FDA clears these devices through the 510(k) route, which means substantial equivalence to an existing device, not proof that they work for you. On 24 October 2026, ‘no visible result’ was the top complaint in the critical reviews of every device we read. See a dermatologist first.

Is iRestore FDA cleared?

Yes. FDA’s 510(k) records list four iRestore clearances under applicant Freedom Laser Therapy: the original iRestore in 2016, the Professional 282 in 2019, the ID-500 in 2021 and the Elite in 2022. We searched them through openFDA on 24 October 2026.

iRestore vs Capillus: which is better?

On Amazon buyer evidence, iRestore by a wide margin. On 24 October 2026 the iRestore Professional had 1,309 ratings at 4.4 stars, and the Capillus PRO had 13 at 3.2. Both brands hold FDA clearances. Thirteen ratings is too few to judge Capillus either way.

How long does a laser cap take to work?

Months. Hairmax’s refund page cites four to six, and iRestore owners in the reviews we read on 24 October 2026 describe three to six. That’s longer than Amazon’s 30-day return window, which is why a brand’s own longer guarantee is worth weighing before you buy.

Can a laser cap make hair loss worse?

Some owners report heavy shedding in the first months. Six of the 49 critical reviews we read on iRestore’s Professional and Essential listings on 24 October 2026 describe it, and a few stopped because of it. Reviews can’t tell you whether that’s a phase or a reaction. Ask a dermatologist.
