Acqua di Giò vs Profondo vs Parfum vs Elixir: Five Armanis, and What Happened to Profumo

Including the original whose critics say it changed, the Profondo that lasts, the Parfum that is nearest to Profumo and fades, and a refill sold by mistake.
Updated: 11 October 2026 · Listings inspected 10 October 2026
Four plain unlabelled glass bottles with cork stoppers, one clear, one pale sea-green, one deep navy and one matte black, standing on wet dark sea pebbles beside a sprig of rosemary and a piece of pale driftwood.
Short answer

Buy the Acqua di Giò EDT for the original scent: 26,102 ratings and the lowest entry price. Buy Profondo EDP if you want it to last. The Parfum is nearest to discontinued Profumo, but 15 of 35 critics say it fades. Leave the Elixir until more buyers weigh in.

Acqua di Giò Profumo is gone. Armani’s own US site marks it discontinued, read on 10 October 2026: “We regret to inform you that this product has been discontinued.”

Most of the internet says the Parfum replaced it. Armani’s own page doesn’t say that.

Under “May we suggest”, Armani lists three bottles: the Eau de Parfum, the Profondo Eau de Parfum and the original Eau de Toilette. The Parfum isn’t among them.

So this page does two jobs. It ranks the five Acqua di Giò bottles you can buy on Amazon today, all sold by Armani’s own storefront, and it tells you which one is the closest thing to Profumo on the evidence we could find.

Which Acqua di Giò is closest to Profumo?

On paper, the Parfum. Armani described Profumo as bergamot and marine notes with incense. The Parfum’s brand-written Amazon listing, read 10 October 2026, lists bergamot, ginger, marine notes, geranium, rosemary, clary sage, patchouli and incense. It is the only current Acqua di Giò that names incense.

That is a match on the label, not a promise about the bottle. Armani’s own suggestion list points elsewhere, and the Parfum’s critics have a specific complaint, which the table below makes plain. If what you miss about Profumo is how long it lasted, read the Parfum’s critics first.

What does each one smell like, according to Armani?

BottleNotes Armani namesSize on Amazon
Eau de ToiletteMarine notes, Calabrian bergamot, neroli, green tangerine, rosemary, persimmon, patchouli3.3 oz
Profondo Eau de ParfumSalty marine notes, cypress, lavender, rosemary, patchouli, musk1.6 oz
ParfumBergamot, ginger, marine, geranium, rosemary, clary sage, patchouli, incense6.7 oz
Profondo ParfumAquatic bergamot, balsamic citrus, everlasting flower1.6 oz
ElixirViolet, leather and marine accords1.6 oz

Notes come from Armani’s US site and the brand-written copy on its own Amazon listings, read 10 October 2026. The Elixir’s listing calls it “The most concentrated men’s fragrance ever achieved on ACQUA DI GIÒ”.

What do the critical reviews complain about?

On 10 October 2026, signed in, we read every one-, two- and three-star review Amazon served for each bottle, under both its “recent” and “helpful” sorts. Duplicates, non-US reviews and free-product reviews came out. Each remaining review is tagged by its main complaint.

The Parfum is the bottle labelled strongest, and 15 of its 35 critics say it fades. Several say a lighter bottle outlasts it. A June 2026 one-star: “The Parfum is supposed to be the longest lasting but the profoundo lasted hours longer”

The EDT has the opposite problem. Sixteen of its 41 critics say it smells different from bottles they bought before, even though Armani’s own storefront sells it.

A March 2026 two-star: “It smells pretty close to the original but as a long time user, I felt something was off.” Some blame fakes, some blame a reformulation. A review can’t settle which.

Two traps on the listings

The refill. The EDT listing sells a 5-ounce refill with no sprayer under the same size menu, and four critics bought it by mistake or found their older bottle wouldn’t unscrew to refill. A June 2025 three-star: “I wish it was more clear that the 5oz bottle is a refill though when choosing the size.”

The 1.6-ounce default. The Profondo, Profondo Parfum and Elixir listings opened on 1.6 ounces on 10 October 2026. Size complaints run through all three. Check the size menu before you check out.

The 1996 original, with more than thirteen times the ratings of any other Acqua di Giò on this page.

26,102 ratings at 4.7 stars on 10 October 2026, 93 per cent in the four-to-five band and 4 per cent at one star. 3.3 ounces was $130.00, or $39.39 an ounce.

The catch is consistency. Sixteen of 41 critics say their bottle smells different from earlier ones, and Amazon tags longevity as mixed across 445 mentions. Pick the size carefully: the 5-ounce option is a refill with no sprayer.

If the original fades on you, this is the bottle its buyers reach for next, and the only Acqua di Giò whose review tags rate longevity as a strength on a decent sample.

1,200 ratings at 4.6 stars on 10 October 2026, 92 per cent in the four-to-five band. Amazon tags longevity positive across 48 mentions. 1.6 ounces was $120.00, or $75.00 an ounce, though bigger sizes cost less per ounce.

It isn’t flawless. Eight of its 23 critics still say it fades, and one November 2025 three-star finds it derivative: “Smells the same as Chrome Azzaro” It is fresh and salty, and it won’t surprise anyone who knows the original.

The closest thing to Profumo on paper, with incense in its notes, and the one whose critics most often say it fades.

1,922 ratings at 4.5 stars on 10 October 2026, 88 per cent in the four-to-five band and 6 per cent at one star. The 6.7-ounce bottle was $248.00, which works out at $37.01 an ounce, the cheapest per ounce here.

Staying power is the catch. Fifteen of 35 critics say it doesn’t last, and a December 2025 three-star doubts the label: “concentration is not parfum seems more like toilette to me .. lasts maybe 2-3 hrs” Three more report a leaking bottle.

Different, not stronger. Buy it expecting a louder Profondo and you will be disappointed; two of its critics say it smells nothing like the EDP.

609 ratings at 4.5 stars on 10 October 2026, 88 per cent in the four-to-five band. Armani lists aquatic bergamot, balsamic citrus and everlasting flower. 1.6 ounces was $150.00, or $93.75 an ounce.

A November 2025 one-star states the problem: “Don’t buy if you’re thinking it’s a stronger version of the profondo edt.” Four of 17 critics also found the bottle smaller than they expected for the price.

Too new to judge. Its 247 ratings are too few to rank Armani’s self-described most concentrated Acqua di Giò anywhere but last.

4.7 stars on 10 October 2026, 92 per cent in the four-to-five band, and the leather and violet notes set it apart on paper. 1.6 ounces was $170.00, or $106.25 an ounce, the dearest here.

Five of its nine critics say it fades fast, which is a hard complaint to survive at that price. An August 2025 three-star: “To me there’s not much that sets this one apart from the regular and especially the profondo.”

Which Acqua di Giò should you buy?

For the scent everyone recognizes, the EDT. It is the cheapest way in and the biggest buyer record on this page.

If you want it to last, the Profondo EDP. It is the one bottle here whose review tags rate longevity as a strength.

If you are replacing Profumo, try the Parfum, and sample it first. It is the nearest on paper and the most criticized for fading.

Leave the Elixir until it has more reviews.

Why they rank in this order

Our rankings normally put review count first, and on count alone the Parfum (1,922 ratings) would rank second. We put the Profondo EDP above it. On a sample only a third smaller, Profondo has the better distribution (92 per cent in the four-to-five band against 88), half the one-star share and far fewer longevity complaints, 8 of 23 against 15 of 35.

Every figure comes from the Amazon listings read in a logged-in session on 10 October 2026, and every bottle was sold by Armani’s own storefront that day. The complaint counts are ours, made by hand from the reviews Amazon served. Amazon caps how many it serves per filter, so these are the critical reviews we could read.

Questions men actually ask

What replaced Acqua di Gio Profumo?

Armani hasn’t named a replacement. Its US site marks Profumo discontinued and suggests the Eau de Parfum, the Profondo Eau de Parfum and the Eau de Toilette instead. The Parfum is the closest current bottle on paper, since it is the only one that lists incense, Profumo’s defining note.

Is Acqua di Gio Parfum stronger than Profondo?

Not on buyer evidence. On 10 October 2026, 15 of the Parfum’s 35 critical reviews said it fades, against 8 of 23 for the Profondo EDP. Amazon’s review summary rates the Profondo EDP’s longevity positive and the Parfum’s mixed. Several Parfum critics say the Profondo lasted longer.

Which Acqua di Gio lasts the longest?

The Profondo Eau de Parfum, on buyer evidence. It is the only Acqua di Giò whose Amazon review tags rate longevity as a strength across a meaningful sample, 48 mentions on 10 October 2026. The original EDT’s longevity tag is mixed across 445 mentions.

What is the difference between Acqua di Gio and Acqua di Gio Profondo?

Armani describes the original as marine, bergamot and neroli over patchouli, and Profondo as salty marine notes with cypress, lavender and musk. Profondo is the deeper, saltier version and is sold as an eau de parfum. Its buyers rate its longevity more highly.

Is the Acqua di Gio 5 oz bottle a refill?

On the Eau de Toilette listing we read on 10 October 2026, the 5-ounce size is a refill with no sprayer. Four critical reviewers bought it by mistake or found their older bottle could not be unscrewed. Check the size menu and the product photos before buying.
