Kiehl’s vs Jack Black: Facial Fuel SPF 20 or Double-Duty SPF 20?

Including what the FDA’s drug directory says is actually filtering the sun in each bottle, why Jack Black’s record shows two formulas, and the size that makes Kiehl’s the cheaper one.

Two plain unlabelled matte white pump bottles, one taller than the other, with a small dab of white lotion on a dark slate slab beside a folded grey waffle towel in cool window light.
Short answer

Buy Jack Black Double-Duty SPF 20 for the long record: 9,316 ratings at 4.5 stars. Buy Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 20 if you want it cheaper per ounce in the 6.8-ounce pump. Neither is SPF 30, so neither replaces sunscreen for a day outside. Check Jack Black’s drug-facts panel: FDA lists two formulas.

Most men assume Kiehl’s is the expensive one. In the size most of them buy, it is. At the large size, it isn’t.

On 3 October 2026 Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20 was $32.00 for 3.3 ounces on Amazon. Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Moisturizer SPF 20 was $33.00 for 2.5 ounces and $52.00 for 6.8. Per ounce: $9.70 for the Jack Black, $13.20 or $7.65 for the Kiehl’s.

Both are daily moisturizers with SPF 20 built in, so they compete for the same spot on the shelf. Because they carry an SPF, both are over-the-counter drugs in the US. That means FDA holds a record of what is filtering the sun in each bottle, and we read it.

What does FDA’s directory say is in each bottle?

FDA’s National Drug Code directory lists every sunscreen’s active ingredients and strengths. We queried it on 3 October 2026.

ListingNDCListed sinceActive ingredients
Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 2049967-608March 2018Avobenzone 30 mg/mL, homosalate 88 mg/mL, octisalate 49 mg/mL, octocrylene 59 mg/mL
Jack Black Double-Duty (older)66738-020May 2009Avobenzone, octinoxate
Jack Black Double Duty (newer)66738-771June 2025Avobenzone 2.2 g/100 mL, octocrylene 9.5 g/100 mL

Kiehl’s uses four filters. Jack Black uses two, and has two records.

The older Jack Black listing names avobenzone and octinoxate. Its strengths are entered in units that don’t add up, so we haven’t printed them. The 2025 listing drops octinoxate and adds octocrylene. One Amazon reviewer, comparing the 3.3- and 8.5-ounce bottles, reported that the label listed only avobenzone and octinoxate, which fits the older formula.

We could not tell from the Amazon listing which version ships today. Neither could the reviews. If it matters to you, the drug-facts panel on the bottle will say. Octinoxate is the one Hawaii stopped allowing in sunscreens sold there from 2021.

Is SPF 20 enough?

For a commute and a day indoors, it’s something. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher for everyday sunscreen. Both of these fall short of that.

Kiehl’s buyers notice. A July 2026 four-star said the only thing that kept it from five stars was that “it is only a 20 SPF”. If you work outside or spend a weekend on the water, put a dedicated sunscreen over either one.

Kiehl’s has the better distribution: 94 per cent against 89, and 2 per cent at one star against 5. Jack Black has fourteen times the ratings.

We rank on the larger sample. A distribution built from 9,316 people moves less than one built from 658. If Kiehl’s holds this shape as its count grows, the order flips.

What Amazon’s review summary flags

Amazon tags each listing’s review themes as positive, mixed or negative. Read 3 October 2026; the counts are Amazon’s.

Jack Black: effectiveness (1,157), moisturizing (480), non-greasy (298) and sun protection (161) are positive. Fragrance (410) and value for money (316) are mixed.

Kiehl’s: moisturizing (28), sun protection (20), fragrance (19) and non-greasy (18) are positive. Value for money (20) is mixed.

Fragrance is the useful split. Jack Black’s scent divides its buyers. Kiehl’s buyers mostly like theirs, on far fewer mentions.

The long track record. Fourteen times the buyers of the Kiehl’s, a dollar less for the size most men start with.

9,316 ratings at 4.5 stars on 3 October 2026, with 89 per cent in the four-to-five band. The 3.3-ounce bottle was $32.00, or $9.70 an ounce, sold by Amazon.com. Amazon tags effectiveness (1,157 mentions) and non-greasy (298) as positive themes. An April 2025 four-star, written after getting “roasted one too many times just walking from my front door to the car”, settled on it as an everyday SPF that doesn’t feel like a chore.

Two catches. Amazon tags fragrance as mixed across 410 mentions, the largest mixed tag on either bottle. And FDA’s directory shows two Double-Duty formulas, so the bottle you get may not be the one the older reviews describe.

Against the Kiehl’s: cheaper at the small size, dearer per ounce than the big Kiehl’s pump.

If you’ll buy the 6.8-ounce pump, this is the cheaper moisturizer per ounce, from the brand most men assume costs more.

658 ratings at 4.7 stars on 3 October 2026, with 94 per cent in the four-to-five band and 2 per cent at one star. The 6.8-ounce pump was $52.00, or $7.65 an ounce; the 2.5-ounce was $33.00, or $13.20. Sold by Kiehl’s Since 1851 through Amazon, Premium Brand Sourced. Amazon tags moisturizing, sun protection and fragrance as positive themes.

The catch is the sample, and the switch from the original. Six hundred ratings is a fourteenth of Jack Black’s record. A November 2025 one-star, from a regular Facial Fuel user, said it “Seems to act and rubs in more like a sun screen vs the moisturizer I’m used to from the original version.”

Buy the small bottle first. Move to the pump once you know your skin likes it.

Which one should you buy?

If you’re buying for the first time, start with the 3.3-ounce Jack Black. It has the longer record, and it costs $32.

If you already use Kiehl’s and like it, the 6.8-ounce Facial Fuel pump is the cheapest way to keep doing that. Per ounce it beats both Jack Black and the small Kiehl’s.

And if neither SPF 20 is enough for your week, keep the moisturizer and add a real sunscreen. Our face sunscreen ranking includes Jack Black’s SPF 45 Sun Guard.

How we compared them

Prices, sizes, ratings, distributions and sellers come from each Amazon listing, read in a signed-in session on 3 October 2026. SiteStripe showed both moisturizers in Premium Beauty at the same rate, so commission played no part in the order. Active ingredients come from FDA’s National Drug Code directory, queried the same day.

Two limits. Amazon’s star filters returned the same mostly positive set of reviews on every filter that day, so there are no complaint counts of our own here. And FDA’s directory records what a company has listed, not what is in a given bottle on a given shelf.
