Born in Roma vs Intense vs Extradose vs Coral Fantasy: Which Valentino Uomo to Buy

Including the original with the biggest buyer record, the Intense for winter, the sweeter Coral Fantasy, the strongest Extradose, and the new bottle we left out.
Updated: 18 October 2026 · Listings inspected 17 October 2026
Four plain unlabelled glass apothecary bottles, clear, coral pink, deep violet and amber, on a pale travertine ledge against a terracotta wall in late sun, with a stone archway behind.
Short answer

Buy the original Born in Roma Eau de Toilette for the biggest buyer record in the family: 4,452 ratings at 4.7. Buy the Intense for cold weather. Coral Fantasy is the sweeter daytime bottle, Extradose the strongest and dearest per ounce. Skip Purple Melancholia until it has more reviews.

Valentino sells every Born in Roma Uomo bottle on Amazon itself. We read five listings on 17 October 2026, and the seller on all five was Valentino Beauty, the brand’s own storefront, shipped by Amazon.

That is rarer than it should be. On our Sauvage page, none of six listings was sold by Dior.

So the question here isn’t which listing is safe. It’s which bottle. They differ more than the matching studded glass suggests.

How are Born in Roma, Intense, Extradose and Coral Fantasy different?

BottleNotes Valentino’s listing namesConcentrationPer ounce, 3.4 oz
Born in Roma EDTViolet leaf, clary sage, vetiverEau de toilette$40.59
IntenseVanilla, lavender, woody notesEau de parfum intense$48.53
Coral FantasyVetiver only; buyers describe apple turning to tobaccoEau de toilette$40.59
ExtradoseSpice blend, lavender with salty facets, vetiver, guaiac wood, leatherTitled EDP, described as Parfum$55.88

Notes come from the brand-written copy on Valentino’s own Amazon listings, read 17 October 2026. Prices are that day’s 3.4-ounce prices. Coral Fantasy’s copy names only vetiver, so its apple and tobacco come from the buyers.

Two listing errors are worth knowing before you order. The men’s Eau de Toilette listing opens its bullet points with “Valentino Donna Born In Roma”, the name of the women’s line.

And the Extradose is titled Eau de Parfum while its own bullets call it “Extradose Parfum”. If concentration matters to you, check the box in the photos.

What we could read, and what we couldn’t

Amazon’s star filters weren’t working on 17 October 2026. Asking for one-star reviews returned the same five-star set as the default page. So we couldn’t pull the critical reviews on their own, and this page publishes no complaint counts of ours.

What we did read: each listing’s full star histogram, Amazon’s “Customers say” tallies, and the 13 reviews Amazon served on each listing. The tallies are Amazon’s own machine counts of how often buyers raise a theme, marked positive, mixed or negative.

One pattern stands out. Every longevity tag in this family is positive. Only one tag of any kind is mixed, and it sits on the Intense.

The one most people mean by Born in Roma, with almost twice the ratings of any other bottle in the family.

On 17 October 2026 it had 4,452 ratings at 4.7 stars, 94 per cent of them four or five and 3 per cent one star. Amazon’s tallies were all positive, scent across 335 mentions and longevity across 62. 3.4 ounces was $138.00, or $40.59 an ounce.

The catch is that “long-lasting” is relative. A Canadian five-star reviewer who liked it still wrote “Although it doesn't last as long as I'd like its still good.” If staying power is the point, the Intense is the better bet.

Buying for winter? This is the bottle: vanilla and lavender over woods, in a heavier eau de parfum.

2,490 ratings at 4.6 stars on 17 October 2026, 92 per cent in the four-to-five band. Amazon’s summary says buyers report it “lasts 6-8 hours on skin”, and 83 mention authenticity positively, which tells you how many checked. 3.4 ounces was $165.00, or $48.53 an ounce.

It is also the family’s one mixed tag: value for money, across 45 mentions. Its one-star share is 5 per cent against the original’s 3. One April 2026 four-star found it far quieter than the name: “About an hour later, I smell nothing.”

Sweeter and fruitier than the original, with the cleanest ratings in the family: 89 per cent five stars.

1,181 ratings at 4.7 stars on 17 October 2026, 96 per cent four or five, and none of Amazon’s six tallies mixed. A June 2026 five-star described the arc plainly: “Once the sweet apple wears off you’re left with a woody tobacco scent that may be addicting or give you a headache.”

If you dislike sweet scents, skip it. It ranks below the Intense because it has under half the ratings at a near-identical average. 3.4 ounces was $138.00, the same $40.59 an ounce as the original.

Strongest of the four, at $15 an ounce more than the original.

406 ratings at 4.6 stars on 17 October 2026, 89 per cent four or five. The copy promises a spice opening, salty lavender and a vetiver, guaiac wood and leather base. Buyers tag scent and value positively. 3.4 ounces was $190.00, or $55.88 an ounce.

The sample is the thinnest of the four ranked, and its 5 per cent three-star share is the family’s highest. Some find it too much. A July 2026 four-star: “For me personally I think the smell is a bit to strong but it smell really nice and fresh.”

Not ranked: Purple Melancholia and Green Stravaganza

Purple Melancholia is the newest Uomo. On 17 October 2026 its listing had 98 ratings at 4.6 stars, under our floor of 100, so it sits here instead of in the ranking.

The copy describes cardamom and lavender over a creamy coconut and amber base. Its one-star share, 6 per cent, was the family’s highest. The one US one-star served that day was blunt: “It literally smells like Axe Excite shower gel and I got no compliments…not worth the money.”

One review is not a verdict. Look again when it has a few hundred.

Uomo Green Stravaganza isn’t sold full size on Amazon at all. A search on 17 October 2026 returned 4 ml and 1.2 ml minis from other sellers, plus the women’s Donna Green Stravaganza. For the men’s bottle, go to a department store.

Which Born in Roma should you buy?

For one bottle that does most things, the original EDT.

For winter evenings, the Intense. Sample it first if longevity is your reason: buyers split on how long it lasts.

For warm days and a sweeter profile, Coral Fantasy. For the strongest version, Extradose, with a smaller buyer record behind it.

Why they rank in this order

Review count first, then average, then the shape of the distribution. The order follows the ratings: 4,452, then 2,490, 1,181 and 406.

Coral Fantasy has the higher average and still ranks below the Intense. A tenth of a star doesn’t outweigh twice the ratings.

Every figure comes from the five listings read in a logged-in session on 17 October 2026. Valentino Beauty sold all five that day. The same flanker problem at Armani is sorted in Stronger With You vs Intensely vs Absolutely vs Parfum.

Questions men actually ask

Is Born in Roma Intense better than the original?

It depends on the season. The original Eau de Toilette had 4,452 ratings at 4.7 stars on 17 October 2026, against the Intense’s 2,490 at 4.6. The Intense is the warmer, vanilla-led bottle and the better cold-weather pick. Its value-for-money tag on Amazon is mixed, though, and the original’s is not.

What is the difference between Born in Roma Intense and Extradose?

Extradose is the stronger, spicier one. Valentino’s copy gives the Intense vanilla, lavender and woody notes, and the Extradose a spice opening, salty lavender and a vetiver, guaiac wood and leather base. On 17 October 2026 Extradose cost $55.88 an ounce against $48.53, and had about a sixth of the ratings.

Is Coral Fantasy a summer fragrance?

Mostly, by its buyers’ account. It opens on sweet apple and dries down to tobacco, and reviewers describe it as a daytime, warm-weather bottle. One five-star reviewer put its longevity at five to eight hours, depending on sprays and heat. For cold weather, the Intense or Extradose are the heavier picks.

Is Born in Roma on Amazon real?

On 17 October 2026, all five Uomo bottles we checked were sold by Valentino Beauty, the brand’s own storefront, and shipped by Amazon. That can change, since any seller can win the buy box later. Check the “Sold by” line on the listing before you pay.

Which Born in Roma lasts the longest?

On the evidence we could read, the Intense. Amazon’s summary of its reviews says buyers report six to eight hours on skin, and its longevity tag is positive across 49 mentions. The original’s tag is positive too, across 62. Extradose should be stronger on paper but has only nine longevity mentions to judge from.
