Buy the Remington Balder Pro for most bald heads: 17,407 ratings, the closest shave, $60, but 26 of 43 critics say it died. The Norelco Head Shaver Pro 9000 is gentlest but slow. Add the Wahl foil for necklines. Skip the original Freebird, which misses our floor.
We read 190 critical reviews of five head shavers on Amazon on 10 October 2026. They fail in two ways, and which way depends almost entirely on the brand.
The Remington dies. The Philips Norelcos don’t cut close enough.
Twenty-six of the Remington Balder Pro’s 43 critics say it stopped holding a charge, broke or died outright. Twenty-one of the Norelco Head Shaver Pro 7000’s 35 critics say it leaves stubble or needs pass after pass. The Freebird manages both.
That is the decision on this page. Pick the failure you can live with.
How do head shavers fail?
Read on 10 October 2026, signed in: every one-, two- and three-star review Amazon served for each shaver under its “recent” and “helpful” sorts, with duplicates, non-US reviews and free-product reviews removed. Each is tagged by its main complaint.
| Shaver | Critical reviews read | Died, won’t charge or broke | Not close, slow, many passes | Next most common |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remington Balder Pro | 43 | 26 | 7 | clogs or hard to clean, 3 |
| Wahl 5 Star Shaver/Shaper | 45 | 14 | 9 | arrived opened, 2 |
| Norelco Head Shaver Pro 9000 | 35 | 6 | 16 | irritation, 4; no power adapter, 3 |
| Freebird FlexSeries Pro | 32 | 11 | 17 | pulls or irritates, 2 |
| Norelco Head Shaver Pro 7000 | 35 | 4 | 21 | no charger or adapter, 4 |
Read across the Remington row and down the Norelco rows and the pattern is hard to miss.
Remington’s failures arrive late. Its critics report deaths at one month, five months, eleven months and, in one August 2026 three-star, “26 months it cleaned my head. 27th month it died.” Norelco’s complaints arrive on the first shave.
Rotary head shaver or foil?
Four of the five shavers here are rotary head shavers: a palm-sized body with four to seven round cutting heads that float over the curve of the skull. The Wahl is the exception, a flat foil shaver that some buyers keep for a final pass around the neck and ears.
Buyers keep reporting the same trade. Rotary heads are fast over the crown and slow in the hollows behind the ears. A foil is slower over the whole head and closer where it touches. The Wahl’s critics warn about its foil: “Don’t press to hard you can bend the foil.”
What does a head shaver cost after the first year?
The blades wear, and the replacements aren’t cheap. In Amazon search results on 10 October 2026, a Remington Balder Pro replacement head was $34.99, a set of Philips Norelco head shaver heads was $34.96, and Freebird’s official three-blade refill pack was $69.95, about $23 a blade.
On a $60 Remington, one replacement head is more than half the price of the shaver. That changes the sums when the Remington’s critics say the battery goes at a year or two anyway.
Does it come with a plug?
Check before you gift one.
Three of the Norelco 9000’s critics and four of the Norelco 7000’s say there was no wall adapter in the box. A June 2026 one-star on the 9000: “POWER ADAPTER NOT INCLUDED!” A Norelco 7000 critic in August 2026 adds that it uses a proprietary plug, not USB. Budget for the adapter.
